CoolSculpting or Liposuction: Which Treatment Should I Choose?

Do you have stubborn fat? This unwanted fat CoolSculpting or Liposuction: Which Treatment Should I Choose?hangs around, even with a good diet and plenty of exercise. It’s the type of fat that lurks in your trouble spots and just won’t go away. If you’ve got stubborn fat (and who doesn’t have a little?), a little help from Dr. Waldorf may be the solution. Come see us at The Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery and send that unwanted fat packing.

Two of our most popular body contouring procedures are liposuction and CoolSculpting. Which of these treatments is right for you?

What Is Liposuction?

You’ve probably heard about liposuction, but how much do you really know about the procedure? Liposuction is a type of surgical procedure that we use to remove fat and reshape the body. Many people mistakenly believe that liposuction is actually a weight-loss treatment. While you may lose some weight, liposuction isn’t for weight loss, but rather for reshaping the body to its ideal form.

During liposuction, a series of small incisions are made. The treatment area is injected with a saline and anesthetic solution, which also contains a medication to constrict the blood vessels. This helps to separate the fat cells for easier removal, controls bleeding during the procedure, helps with pain management after surgery and reduces the amount of bruising you’ll experience. Then, fat is suctioned out through the incisions. For some patients, we use ultrasonic or laser energy to break up the fat cells prior to removal.

Liposuction takes about 1-2 hours, depending on the area treated. Most patients miss about 1-2 weeks from work and can return to full activity levels in 4-6 weeks.

Liposuction is an ideal choice for patients wanting:

  • Permanent fat removal in treatment areas.
  • Dramatic results with only one treatment.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, non-invasive body contouring procedure. It uses a specialized cooling device to freeze and destroy fat cells. The damaged cells are then naturally eliminated by your body over time. This results in a very natural-looking result that improves over the first couple months after treatment.

CoolSculpting is completely non-invasive and requires no incisions, no needles, etc. You can return to work and your regular activities immediately. Some patients have a bit of pain, numbness or discomfort, but this typically resolves quickly. Each treatment takes about an hour, but you will likely need multiple treatments to see the full result.

CoolSculpting is a great choice for patients that want:

  • To permanently remove fat in a specific problem area.
  • Natural-looking, subtle results.
  • No downtime after treatment.

Both CoolSculpting and liposuction are wonderful body sculpting treatments. If you want to learn more about either of these treatments, call us and schedule your consultation with Dr. Waldorf. A better shape is within your reach.

I Want My Body Back After Baby: What Can I Do?

Chubby baby cheeks are irresistible, but the loose abdominal skin and saggy breasts that remain with Mom’s body post-baby are a little less cute. If you want to get your body back into pre-baby shape after pregnancy, come see Dr. Waldorf. She’ll work with you to create a personalized plan to restore your body to its pre-baby glory. Having a baby doesn’t mean you can’t have a great body, too. Mommy… it’s time for a makeover.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

Pregnancy and childbirth can I Want My Body Back After Baby: What Can I Do?take their toll on the body. A Mommy Makeover uses a customized combination of cosmetic treatments to reverse some of the negative aesthetic effects of pregnancy and childbirth. Your treatment plan will be customized to your specific needs and concerns. We’ll do our best to minimize the number of surgeries needed and to combine procedures when we can safely do so.

A mommy makeover can consist of several different cosmetic treatments including:

  • Tummy Tuck: Stretched out abdominal skin and muscles are common after pregnancy. A tummy tuck can tighten the skin and muscles for a flatter stomach. We can also remove excess skin and fat from this area. Many patients notice a decrease in the number of stretch marks they have after surgery, since some may be removed as Dr. Waldorf removes excess skin.
  • Liposuction: Many women find that they develop localized pockets of stubborn fat during and after pregnancy. We can use liposuction to remove this fat and to reshape and sculpt the body. The thigh area and the abdominal area are both popular liposuction sites during a mommy makeover.
  • Breast Surgeries: Pregnancy and breastfeeding forever alters the breasts. We can address these changes with various breast surgeries. A breast lift can reduce sagging and reshape the breasts for perkier, post-pregnancy breasts. Breast augmentation can increase your breast size and restore breast volume. Breast reduction can reduce the size of the breasts in women with large natural breasts. We can combine any of these surgeries to create your ideal result.
  • Labiaplasty: The labia can become stretched out and misshapen after pregnancy. Labiaplasty can create a more attractive shape for this area. This surgery can help women to regain confidence in their bodies after baby. Our all-female staff understands that this is a delicate topic and will help you to feel comfortable throughout the process.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover can transform your body after baby, but it isn’t for everyone. You’ll want to wait until you’ve finished having children. Are There Any Treatments for Vericose Veins?

Are There Any Treatments for Vericose Veins?Do you hide your legs inside pants, even when the weather is scorching hot? Are you embarrassed of your leg veins? Come on in and talk with Dr. Waldorf about the available treatment options for leg veins. You do have options and we’re ready to help.

Leg Veins… What Causes Them?

Leg veins (including varicose veins and spider veins) can be caused by many factors including age, genetics, hormones, sun exposure or prolonged standing. Many of these vascular deformations can be treated. Here at the Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery, we have extensive experience working on leg veins and can discuss the various treatment options available for your situation. (This article from WebMD has some great information about spider veins, if you want to learn more.)

What Are My Treatment Options?

We primarily use two different treatments for leg veins, depending on the size of the blood vessels. During your consultation, we’ll examine the veins, offer our recommendations and give you an idea of what to expect if you choose treatment with us.

  • Laser Treatments for Leg Veins: Laser treatments can effectively clear up smaller veins (like those found on the face). On the legs, we occasionally use it to clear up small veins or we use it after sclerotherapy to clear up smaller veins that were not eliminated by the sclerosing treatment.
  • Sclerotherapy for Leg Veins: This is our primary treatment for leg veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the veins. This solution causes the veins to turn white, swell and collapse. You’ll need to use special compression stockings for about three days after each treatment to ensure optimal results. When the vein closes, the body will reroute blood flow through healthy veins. The procedure takes 30-60 minutes and you may need a few treatments for optimal results. Most patients find the treatment only mildly uncomfortable.

If leg veins are the cause of keeping your legs hidden, schedule a leg vein consultation today. Sclerotherapy can help you to clear up unsightly leg veins without surgery. Put on those shorts with pride!

My Child’s Ears Are Misshapen. Can Otoplasty Help?

As a parent, nothing is more painful than seeing your child suffer. If you have a child with protruding ears, you know the hurt that can come when children tease. Otoplasty can help. This surgery corrects the shape, size and protrusion of the ears. Call us today and ask about otoplasty.

What Is Otoplasty?

The term “otoplasty” might sound complicated, but the definition is actually quite simple: otoplasty is ear surgery. The actual procedure itself is highly customized to the needs of the patient. It can pin back ears that stick out, resize ears that are too large or reshape ears. Dr. Waldorf is highly experienced in performing this surgery and will work with you to create your ideal ear.

I’m Interested in Otoplasty for My Child. What Do I Need to Know?

Otoplasty can be performed on both adults and children. If your ears bother you, come on in. If your child has misshapen ears, sooner may be better than My Child’s Ears Are Misshapen. Can Otoplasty Help?later for otoplasty. Other children can be cruel and correcting aesthetic ear problems can help a child to feel more confident.

Generally, Dr. Waldorf recommends waiting until the child is about 5 years old (the surgery is often performed right before kindergarten) because this gives the cartilage in the ear sufficient time to develop. Dr. Waldorf can give you a better idea of the results your child can expect after surgery during the consultation process.

What Is Recovery Like?

Many parents worry about putting their child through a surgery. These feelings are to be expected and Dr. Waldorf can answer any questions you or your child may have about the surgical process and recovery. In general, the patient will need to wear a head dressing for about a week. The ears need to protected for about six weeks after surgery. Recovery requires about a week of downtime.

During recovery, you’ll need to avoid sleeping or lying on the ears. Propping the head up can help with this. Dr. Waldorf can also prescribe painkillers (chosen based on the child’s age) to increase comfort during healing.

Does your child have misshapen ears? Call us today and schedule a consultation with Dr. Waldorf. Otoplasty can help your child to avoid painful teasing over their ears and to obtain a natural-looking ear shape and size.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal? Are you tired of shaving? Do you want to put an end to waxing and tweezing? Laser hair removal might be the solution. This procedure removes hair using laser energy. The results are very long-lasting and, in the right patients, the procedure is very effective. Are you a good candidate? Find out below.

Do You Have Dark Hair?

The laser we use for laser hair removal (Cynosure Elite YAG Laser™) targets the pigment in your hair follicles. Dark hair is treated most effectively. If you have blonde or gray hair, we may be unable to get the hair reduction results you want.

Dark or tanned skin can be challenge for laser hair removal. The laser targets pigment and darker skin has more of this pigment which can create adverse effects when a laser is used on it. During your hair removal consultation we can evaluate your hair and skin color to determine if laser hair removal will work for you.

Will You Commit to Multiple Treatment Cycles?

Laser hair removal targets hair that is actively growing. At any given time you have hair in every growth cycle on your body. You’ll need multiple treatments, spaced about six weeks apart, to treat the majority of hair follicles while they are in the active stage. We typically recommend four to six treatments.

Hair removal is very effective, but it isn’t a guarantee of permanent hair removal. You may need to return for maintenance treatments and you may have a bit of hair left after treatment (although it will typically be much lighter and thinner than your original hair).

Will You Avoid Tanning During Treatment?

You’ll need to avoid tanning and self-tanners during treatment. We ask our patients to stop tanning at least two weeks prior to treatment. You’ll also need to avoid plucking or waxing prior to treatment. Please come in for your treatment with a clean shave.

Is Laser Hair Removal Right for Me?

This treatment requires no downtime and can be done on your lunch hour. Laser hair removal feels like small rubber band snaps, however, we do use a Zimmer air cooler to increase patient comfort during treatment. If you’re interested in laser hair removal, call us at 800-310-7901 to schedule your complimentary consultation. A consultation allows us to evaluate your skin and hair to determine if laser hair removal is a good fit. It also gives you an opportunity to ask questions and to learn more about the procedure and what to expect.

Say goodbye to unwanted hair. Call us today to schedule your laser hair removal appointment.
