Facelift

Facelift

As we age, our skin begins to loosen and sag. We start to see prominent wrinkles around the nose and mouth, and the development of jowls and loose neck tissue. The plump fat seen in a young face also begins to thin and settle lower in the face. In some, this process is accelerated by heredity, environmental exposures, and prolonged sun damage. The appearance of the aging lower face and neck can be improved with a facelift or rhytidectomy procedure from The Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery in Portland, OR.

Your Consultation

We believe you need to be well-informed about the cosmetic procedure in which you are interested, including the pre- and post- operative expectations. At your initial consult, the physician will meet with you about your concerns and personal goals. Feel free to bring in images of looks that you do or don’t like to help us understand your aesthetic tastes and goals. The surgeon will then examine you, and offer her opinion on how to achieve your goals, based on best practices.

Choosing a surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We encourage you to take time to question the physician and her team. We believe the formation of a personal bond is an integral part of the surgery and healing process.

The Surgery

A facelift or rhytidectomy can improve the most visible signs of aging by tightening deeper structures, removing or redistributing selected areas of fat, and redraping the skin of the face and neck. By making incisions around the ear and into the hairline, a skilled plastic surgeon can access the fat, muscles, and soft tissue and reposition them to restore a more youthful contour. The skin is then gently smoothed and tightened.

The surgery takes several hours, and is performed with general anesthesia. Most patients spend the first night recovering at the hospital.

Dear Dr. Waldorf,
Ten years ago, after losing my dear son, I looked in the mirror and gradually saw myself disappear. The weight crept on and the sadness was accentuated by the person I saw in the mirror. Just a few days after surgery, I looked in the mirror and I saw myself. Ten, maybe 15 years ago, and for that I thank you. I know you went the extra mile for me. What you do is not superficial–it touches people right down to their soul

Recovery

After a facelift, a person should relax for 10 to 14 days to allow healing. Most people find they are able to resume a regular work or home schedule after that time period. Most can return to strenuous activity levels in 4-6 weeks.

Risks

Facial surgery, as with all surgical procedures, carries a certain amount of risk. It is important that you understand these risks, and the possible complications or adverse events, associated with them. Your surgeon will discuss any risks with you during your consultation and pre-operative appointments.
