CHIN AUGMENTATION
CHANGE YOUR FACIAL PROFILE IN PORTLAND
The chin is an important structure in a person’s profile. When someone has a small chin, the transition between the lower face and neck often appears oblique, making the neck look fuller. On profile, the nose may be normal, but appear large when the chin is small, and the proportions are off. Conversely, a prominent chin can also disrupt the appearance of a person’s profile. Chin augmentation from Portland’s The Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery, also called genioplasty, mentoplasty, or chin enhancement surgery, can improve the proportions of the face and can also create a nicer jawline and neckline.*

WHAT IS CHIN AUGMENTATION?
Chin enhancement or chin augmentation involves reshaping and enhancing the chin with an implant. This procedure is often performed correct a weak chin or recessed chin. Chin augmentation can also enhance the overall aesthetic of your facial features.
Chin augmentation has many benefits such as increasing the size of the chin, improving the definition of the jawline, enhancing a weak chin, improving facial balance and harmony, and reducing the look of a double chin that is caused by your chin bone not being strong enough. Silicone implants increase the projection of the chin. If you have an overly projecting chin, bone can be removed with chin reduction surgery. Your confidence and self-esteem may be improved when the proportions of the face are enhanced. The implant is typically placed directly on the bone.
WHO IS A GOOD CHIN AUGMENTATION CANDIDATE?
Individuals who would like a stronger, more defined chin and jawline are good candidates for chin augmentation surgery. This procedure works best for patients who have normally functioning jaws but weak chin profiles. Chin augmentation could be ideal for someone who is bothered by having a recessed or weak chin, or feels like their facial features lack proportion and would like to feel more confident in their appearance. Good candidates are patients who are non-smokers and in good health. Chin augmentation can be a good option for a patient who has used injectable fillers to strengthen the protrusion of their chin in the past and is searching for a longer-lasting solution. Chin augmentation is not recommended for children under the age of sixteen who are still growing or elderly patients with significant bone loss in this area of the face.
YOUR CHIN AUGMENTATION CONSULTATION
We believe you need to be well informed about the cosmetic procedure in which you are interested, including the pre- and post-operative expectations. At your initial consult, your surgeon will meet with you about your concerns and personal goals. Feel free to bring in images of looks that you do or don’t like to help us understand your aesthetic tastes. Your surgeon will then examine you and offer an opinion on how to achieve your goals based on best practices.
Choosing a chin augmentation surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We encourage you to take time to question your surgeon and our team. We believe the formation of a personal bond is an integral part of the surgery and healing process.
WHAT DOES THE CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY PROCEDURE INVOLVE?
The chin shape can often be improved with a chin implant. This chin augmentation procedure is performed through an incision inside the mouth, so there are no visible scars.
The placement of a chin implant involves creating a small pocket over the most prominent portion of the chin and inserting an implant. This increases the projection of the chin.
Chin augmentation surgery takes approximately one hour and is performed with general anesthesia. You can return home the same day, but you will be drowsy and need someone to physically drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM CHIN AUGMENTATION?
After chin augmentation surgery, a person should relax for seven to ten days to allow for healing. Most people are able to resume a regular work or home schedule after that time period and can return to strenuous activity levels in four to six weeks.* Sometimes, swelling may initially obscure the final results of chin augmentation. Following our guidelines is crucial to the success of chin augmentation surgery. We will provide specific instructions for how you should care for yourself.

CHIN AUGMENTATION RISKS
Chin augmentation surgery, as with all surgical procedures, carries a certain amount of risk. It is important that you understand these risks and the possible complications or adverse events associated with them. Your chin augmentation surgeon will discuss any risks with you during your consultation and pre- operative appointments.
ADDITIONAL RELATED FACIAL COSMETIC PROCEDURES
Along with chin augmentation, The Waldorf Center offers a wide variety of other procedures to enhance facial contours or restore a more youthful, balanced appearance to the face by addressing specific features. Some of our most popular options include facelift, blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty.
A facelift removes excess facial fat, tightens facial muscles, and trims or redrapes facial skin to restore a firmer, smoother, and more youthful look to the face.
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is done to improve the appearance of the eyelids. This procedure rejuvenates the area surrounding the eyes, addressing loose, sagging skin, and fat deposits that appear as puffiness.
Rhinoplasty or a nose job is a cosmetic procedure that involves altering or reconstructing the nose. It can reshape your nose and improve your appearance. Sometimes chin augmentation may be recommended to a patient who is having rhinoplasty to improve overall facial proportions. The size of the chin can increase or minimize the perceived size of the nose.
In addition to surgical chin augmentation, we offer many non-surgical approaches for facial rejuvenation such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers. These minimally invasive treatments are injectables that can address wrinkles or enhance your facial appearance in other ways. BOTOX® reduces expression wrinkles while facial fillers add plumpness to minimize wrinkles associated with volume loss. Fillers can also make the cheeks, jaw, and lower face area look more defined. BOTOX® can slim an overly square jaw. KYBELLA® is a type of injectable that breaks down fat cells to reduce fullness between the chin and neck, improving the look of a double chin. CoolSculpting® is another method of reducing resistant fat below the chin for sharper, slimmer-looking jawline.
