STIMULATE COLLAGEN WITH A NATURAL FILLER
TO REDUCE FACIAL WRINKLES AND
MORE IN PORTLAND, OR
It's an unfortunate fact that the skin naturally produces less of its own collagen and hyaluronic acid as we age, while cellular turnover slows and the outer layers are subjected to cumulative damage from the external environment. The skin becomes thinner while the once firm facial contours are lost to laxity and sagging. There are ways to counteract this. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a treatment used to kick-start the skin's healing and regenerative processes. Oregon patients who want to achieve a more youthful, radiant, and less wrinkled appearance without the need for surgical procedures or fillers containing synthetic or animal-derived chemical materials can benefit from SELPHYL® at Portland's Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery. This trendy treatment, which is sometimes called "next generation PRP" or a "Vampire Facelift," is considered to be a more "natural" cosmetic procedure, since an injectable made from the patient's own blood is used to rejuvenate the skin.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR CONSULTATION FOR SELPHYL®
The first step before having any kind of aesthetic or surgical procedure, including SELPHYL®, is to start off by having a personalized consultation with our team. The Waldorf Center believes that it's important for every patient to be well informed on what's involved in the SELPHYL® process, including the risks and potential benefits.
During your SELPHYL® consultation, your injector will assess your skin and facial features to put together a treatment plan. They will discuss your medical background with you—including any medications or supplements you're taking or previous cosmetic treatments you may have had—to help you decide whether SELPHYL® is the most suitable choice for you. This is the ideal opportunity to bring up any questions or concerns you have and tell them about your goals so that they have a clear understanding of your expectations. They will tell you more about how to prepare for the injections, what to expect on the day of the treatment, costs, and what the recovery will be like.

WHAT IS SELPHYL®?
Platelets are cell fragments that are responsible for helping your blood to clot when you're injured. Because it contains proteins that encourage cell growth, injections of PRP—a concentrate that contains a much higher number of platelets than are normally found in blood—are used for healing injuries and for cosmetic procedures to enhance the skin. SELPHYL® is a type of PRP treatment that involves converting liquid PRP to a gel-like substance called platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM).
Patients who want to improve the look of wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, depressions caused by collagen loss, sagging skin, uneven texture, or other signs of aging can benefit from the hypoallergenic and cost-effective SELPHYL®. When the skin loses collagen as you get older, it's more likely that wrinkles and hollow areas will form. The PRFM encourages more collagen production to fill in the thinning areas of the skin. Unlike other PRP platforms, the advanced SELPHYL® system is designed to remove almost all contaminating cells while creating a structure that protects platelets and retains them in the area where they are injected.
YOUR SELPHYL® SESSION
Not much preparation is required before getting SELPHYL®, and there's no need for allergy testing, but your injector will tell you more about what you'll need to in advance of your treatment during your consultation.
For the SELPHYL® session itself, a tourniquet is applied, and a small sample of your blood will be drawn. This blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the other components, which are not needed.
In this more advanced form of PRP, calcium chloride is then added to the mixture so that the fibrinogen can be converted to fibrin. The PRFM is then re-injected into the targeted areas of the skin. This PRFM contains high levels of growth factors, which help to stimulate collagen formation, restart the skin's healing processes, and improve the general health of the skin.
It usually takes no more than 20 minutes for the procedure to be completed at our office. SELPHYL® is virtually painless, though there may be some temporary discomfort from the “pinch-like” feeling of the blood draw and the injections themselves.
RECOVERING FROM SELPHYL®
SELPHYL® PRFM treatments usually don't cause any severe side effects, and the risk of allergic reactions that can happen when you inject other medications is almost nonexistent, since it's your own blood that has been collected. There are some possible short-term side effects, including effects associated with other injectable treatments: mild swelling, bruising, irritation, itching, and tenderness around the area where the injections happened.
Unlike hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, it can take some time before the results of SELPHYL® become noticeable. The skin gradually shows signs of improvement after a SELPHYL® session, becoming more volumized and healthier
within several weeks or months as collagen levels increase and other healing benefits unfold. The results from any PRP procedure are believed to last for up to 18 months. Some patients choose to have multiple treatments for enhanced results.
WHAT OTHER SKIN REJUVENATION OPTIONS COMPLEMENT SELPHYL® IN PORTLAND?
There are many types of skin resurfacing or skin rejuvenation treatments that can boost the results of a SELPHYL® session, including DermaFrac® microneedling, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. These are mainly designed for enhancing the overall skin texture and pigmentation by minimizing irregularities, although they also have the effect of smoothing wrinkles.
The PRFM system is most effective on superficial wrinkles and areas that need added volume. Patients often request treatments for targeting various types of wrinkles that treatments like SELPHYL® don't work as well to address. For deeper, static wrinkles around the lower face, such as nasolabial folds, facial fillers like Juvéderm® will be more effective. BOTOX® Cosmetic is better for addressing wrinkles that are linked to repetitive muscle contractions on the face, such as crow's feet.
The most ideal option depends on which type of skin damage a patient wants to treat. Each patient's treatment plan can be fully personalized to address unique concerns, and a combination of different treatments may be used.
