ThermiVa® for Portland
Nonsurgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Childbirth and the natural aging process cause changes that can impact feminine wellness. A particularly strenuous vaginal childbirth, multiple births, and the effects of menopause can cause physical changes that rob women (and their partners) of their sense of well-being and happiness. Tissue laxity can lead to a loss of sensation during intercourse and diminished bladder control. Increased dryness further adds to the discomfort, and can cause pain during intimate contact—or even just while performing typical daily activities. Women facing these problems have a non-surgical solution in a new member of the Thermi® family of products: ThermiVa®. Portland practice The Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery offers the modern treatment for women who want to take charge of the look and feel of their vaginal area, while avoiding risks and recuperation associated with surgery.
Instead of incisions or sutures, ThermiVa® treatments involve the use of radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue to stimulate collagen production, without the need for significant downtime after. The collagen-building process strengthens vaginal walls, thickens and tightens tissue, and encourages increased moisture retention to increase sensation, improve stress incontinence, and contract loose labia.

Your ThermiVa® Consultation
Women dealing with the conditions that ThermiVa® treats often have many questions of an intimate nature. The Waldorf Center team understands that vaginal atrophy and its symptoms are a sensitive topic for many patients, which is why each consultation is conducted with discretion and sensitivity. It is important for patients to be well informed and have all their questions answered, so they feel not just comfortable, but confident in their decision.
Women considering their options for vaginal rejuvenation should not hesitate to ask whatever they feel the need to ask, trusting that they will get honest feedback from a caring professional. The Waldorf Center is about more than making physical changes to a patient’s body; building long-term relationships that ultimately improve the health, emotional outlook, and life of each person in our care is what drives what we do.
Your ThermiVa® Treatment
ThermiVa® treatment sessions are suitable for patients who:
- Are over the age of 18
- Suffer from vaginal atrophy, looseness from weak Kegel or pelvic floor muscles, flatulence, excessive sweating, and/or dryness; lack of friction or sensation during intercourse; and pain during intercourse
- Are concerned about the appearance of their vaginal area, especially while wearing bathing suits, athletic attire, leggings, jeans, etc.
- Have pelvic prolapse (such as fallen bladder or fallen rectum)
- Are not pregnant
- Do not have a urinary tract infection (UTI) or a skin infection in or around the areas of treatment
ThermiVa® treatment sessions could also help patients reduce leaky bladder symptoms or stress incontinence, and aid relieving orgasmic dysfunction. They are suitable for women who are pre-or post-menopausal, have had a hysterectomy, are breastfeeding, and/or have IUDs (intra uterine devices).
It is recommended that patients wait six weeks after an uneventful, normal vaginal delivery to receive a ThermiVa® session, as this provides enough time for any necessary natural vaginal repair to occur. As well, tissue response to ThermiVa® at this period can be most effective.
The radiofrequency energy that stimulates change during a ThermiVa® treatment comes from a smooth, S-shaped electrode device with rounded tips for comfort. It is soft and made of plastic. This handheld piece, designed for treatments related to the vaginal anatomy, is carefully moved over the labia (the inner and outer folds, or lips, of the vulva at either side of the vagina), and then inserted directly into the area to be treated. The device delivers energy in a controlled manner that tissues absorb as heat, prompting tightening by remodeling the existing collagen and kick-starting new collagen growth in the vaginal area.
Collagen is a protein that occurs naturally in the body. Its role is to give skin its structure, strength, and ability to retain moisture. All of these qualities are required to maintain a healthy vagina, but they can be impeded by physically traumatic processes such as strenuous and/or multiple childbirths or menopause. The collagen spike provided by a ThermiVa® session can ease all these issues and restore balance in the area.
ThermiVa® treatment sessions take about 30 minutes each. A ThermiVa® session is comfortable and painless, and is performed in-office. Patients often report that it feels like a warm, gentle massage. Typically, a series of three treatments are performed with a four-week interval in between each treatment.
Recovering From ThermiVa®
Patients will notice some immediate benefits, with results further improving in the weeks following the ThermiVa® treatment session. One application of radiofrequency energy can prompt changes, but up to three sessions may be required to deliver the full desired results. The treatments should be spaced out, and can produce tighter tissues and increased moisture that lasts for anywhere from nine months to more than a year under ideal conditions. After that, annual touch-up or maintenance visits can allow patients to maintain their improved vaginal conditions.
Since ThermiVa® is nonsurgical, recovery time is minimal. Patients tend to be able to resume all of their normal activities immediately after the procedure.
Common side effects after a ThermiVa® treatment session may include temporary pain in the treated areas, reddening of the skin, and/or inflammation. These are all expected to resolve on their own in the days after the session.
Procedures Beyond ThermiVa®
Note that while a ThermiVa® treatment can cause loose labia to contract, there is also a surgical option—labiaplasty—that women with this specific concern can consider. Long labia can chafe during certain exercises or other physical activity, and may be visible when certain tight-fitting outfits are worn, including yoga pants and similar garments. Labiaplasty is a subtle cosmetic surgery procedure in which the labia minora (the inner folds of skin that cover the clitoris and vaginal opening) are trimmed down to a patient’s preference. In some cases, fat may also be grafted to the labia.
For more comprehensive post-natal self-care, The Waldorf Center offers Portland mothers a specialized Mommy Makeover after childbirth. The package would include a combination of procedures tailored to the specific needs and desired results of the patient. One of the advantages of this package is that the procedures typically involved can be performed at the same time to lessen overall recovery time.
ThermiVa®, and some of the other treatments you may be interested in, deliver the best results if they are undertaken when you no longer wish to go through further pregnancies.
Our surgeons and the Center staff have a unique understanding of the needs of women, and our practice is experienced in performing ThermiVa® and Mommy Makeover sessions. Talk to The Waldorf Center team to determine which procedures may be right for you.
