People with prominent ears- ears which are usually proportionally sized but may not sit back far enough- are often very self-conscious about their ears. Having the ears reshaped can truly improve self-esteem and confidence. With otoplasty, one of our surgeons at the Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery can adjust the proportion, shape, and projection of the ear. The patient should be at least five years of age so that the ear cartilage is stable enough for the procedure.

Your Consultation

We believe you need to be well-informed about the cosmetic procedure in which you are interested, including the pre- and post- operative expectations. At your initial consult, the physician will meet with you about your concerns and personal goals. Feel free to bring in images of looks that you do or don’t like to help us understand your aesthetic tastes and goals. The surgeon will then examine you, and offer her opinion on how to achieve your goals, based on best practices.

Choosing a surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We encourage you to take time to question the physician and her team. We believe the formation of a personal bond is an integral part of the surgery and healing process.

The Surgery

Ear surgery is a highly individualized procedure. The techniques utilized are dependent upon the particular characteristic of the ear that the patient desires to change. In the case of prominent ears, an incision can be made behind the ear, and the cartilage can be reshaped to help the ear sit closer to the head. In general, incisions are nicely hidden in the natural folds of the ear or on the back of the ear.

The procedure takes approximately an hour, and is usually performed with general anesthesia. You will go home the same day.

Recovery

After this procedure, the patient must wear a head dressing for a week, and then must protect his or her ears for six weeks.

Risks

Ear surgery, as with all surgical procedures, carries a certain amount of risk. It is important that you understand these risks, and the possible complications or adverse events, associated with them. Your surgeon will discuss any risks with you during your consultation and pre-operative appointments.
