Christopher S. Zarella, MD

Before ever considering a career in plastic surgery, Dr. Zarella’s early years set him up for his career path. Dr. Zarella attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, and graduated with Honors. He then attended Wake Forest University for both medical school and his General Surgery residency. Following this, he completed his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. His surgical education has allowed him attainment of board certification by both, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as well as the American Board of Surgery. He has always had a special interest in the care of children, and thus went on for further specialization, training in Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

The great breadth of the field of plastic surgery, involving patients of all ages, and all parts of the body is what most attracted Dr. Zarella to plastic surgery. Thus, he enjoys serving both adult and pediatric patients. He is an active member of the Cleft and Craniofacial Team at the Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, and his work there involves surgery to correct numerous congenital deformities, including cleft lip and palate, craniosynostois and other skull deformities, anomalies of the pediatric hand and foot, and any other reconstructive procedure a child needs, whether from development or from trauma. He feels that the skillset acquired from knowing the needs of a growing child augments his knowledge and management of the concerns of his adult patients. Thus, he also specializes in a wide range of procedures for adults, including facial rejuvenation and reconstruction, body contouring, and breast surgery, both cosmetic and reconstructive.

After a decade of training following the completion of medical school, he is committed to maintaining and continuing his medical education. He stays current with the latest developments in plastic and reconstructive surgery through attendance at both national and international society meetings, and has even been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to present his pediatric plastic surgery research at some of these meetings.

He has recently become interested in international health care, and his work with cleft lip and palate has brought him the opportunity to participate in surgical mission trips in China and Central America.

Dr. Zarella enjoys his time outside of his busy life practicing medicine. He loves being outdoors and this was what drew him to return to the Pacific Northwest to start his career after his Craniofacial Fellowship training. He is an avid runner, and always looks forward to participating in the Hood to Coast race, his favorite event of the year. He also enjoys art, and the vibrant art scene that Portland, OR offers. In fact, he is himself an artist, and back in high school was fortunate enough to win a national award for his artwork, which led to it being displayed in multiple cities around the nation. He believes that the artistry required for plastic surgery affords the perfect marriage between his lives both in and outside of work.
