Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic procedures for women. Women may choose to undergo breast augmentation using breast implants for a variety of reasons, including:

  • To enhance the size or symmetry of the breasts to balance body proportion;
  • To restore lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss;
  • To restore shape to breasts affected by changes in skin elasticity (most likely combined with a breast lift procedure)
  • To correct a physical malformation, such as tuberous breasts

Your Consultation

We believe you need to be well-informed about the cosmetic procedure in which you are interested, including the pre- and post-operative expectations. At your initial consult, the physician will meet with you about your concerns and personal goals. Feel free to bring in images of looks that you do or don’t like to help us understand your aesthetic tastes. Your consultation will also include a 3D picture session which will enable you to view a simulation of different looks with your 3D picture. The surgeon will then examine you, discuss the simulation pictures with you, and offer her opinion on how to achieve your goals, based on best practices.

Choosing a surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We encourage you to take time to question the physician and her team. We believe the formation of a personal bond is an integral part of the surgery and healing process.

Breast Implants

At our center we use FDA-approved breast implants. These implants may be filled with either a cohesive silicone gel or with a salt-water solution known as saline. Two types of silicone gel implants are now FDA-approved: a round silicone gel implant and a highly-cohesive gel implant. The newest highly-cohesive gel implant features a silhouette that follows the natural curve of a woman’s breast. The outer shell on all of the implant types is an elastic silicone gel. The implant volume, profile, texture, and filling are all personal details that you and your surgeon will discuss to achieve your desired goals.

The Surgery

Implant sizing and selection, along with the decision regarding the surgical approach (incision placement) for inserting and positioning breast implants, will depend on your preferences, your anatomy and your surgeon’s recommendation.

Incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible, usually under the breast or around the lower part of the areola. Typically, a small incision is made in the crease where the breast meets the chest, or at the junction of the areola and breast skin (where the color changes). The implant is placed through this small incision, usually under the muscle, and is centered beneath the nipple.

The surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours of time, and is performed with general anesthesia. Absorbable stitches are used to close the incision. This is an outpatient procedure, so you will go home the same day.

Recovery

Recovery is relatively quick and most women find they are able to resume a regular work or home schedule within a week. Most can return to strenuous activity levels in 4-6 weeks.

Risks

Breast surgery, as with all surgical procedures, carries a certain amount of risk. It is important that you understand these risks, and the possible complications or adverse events associated with surgery. Your surgeon will discuss the surgical risks with you during your consultation and pre-operative appointments.
