Arm Lift
The shape of the upper arm is commonly affected by aging and fluctuations in weight. With time or after weight loss, many people notice loose extra skin and fat in their upper arms. An arm lift, or brachioplasty, allows a skilled plastic surgeon to remove the excess fat and skin to create a smoother contour to the upper arm.
Your Consultation
We believe you need to be well-informed about the cosmetic procedure in which you are interested, including the pre- and post-operative expectations. At your initial consult, the physician will meet with you about your concerns and personal goals. Feel free to bring in images of looks that you do or don’t like to help us understand your aesthetic tastes and goals. The surgeon will then examine you, and offer her opinion on how to achieve your goals, based on best practices.
Choosing a surgeon is an intensely personal decision. We encourage you to take time to question the physician and her team. We believe the formation of a personal bond is an integral part of the surgery and healing process.
The Surgery
Liposuction is often performed if there is excess fat to be removed in the upper arm. Then an incision is designed in the least noticeable area of the arm. This incision travels from the elbow to the armpit, and is used to remove all of the excess skin and fat to tighten the upper arm.
The surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours of time, and is performed with general anesthesia. Absorbable stitches are used to close the incision. This is an outpatient procedure, so you will go home the same day.
Recovery
Recovery is relatively quick and most patients find they are able to resume a regular work or home schedule after 1-2 weeks. Compression garments are worn during the first several weeks to help control swelling and improve the final result. Most can return to strenuous activity levels in 4-6 weeks.
Risks
Brachioplasty, as with all surgical procedures, carries a certain amount of risk. It is important that you understand these risks, and the possible complications or adverse events associated with surgery. Your surgeon will discuss the surgical risks with you during your consultation and pre-operative appointments.
